Game info New England Patriots vs Detroit Lions

Continuing week 5 of the 2022 NFL season, the New England Patriots face the Detroit Lions, in an American Conference versus National Conference duel. The match will be at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The oval ball will fly this Sunday 9th October 2022 at 17:00 UTC

How does the NFL work in its 2022 edition?

The 2022 season of the National Football League arrives with a bang. After the adoption, for the first time in history in 2021, of a regular season with 17 games for each team and 18 weeks in total (as every team takes a week off), we will once again have this format. It is worth remembering that, years ago, each team played 16 games during the qualifying phase, with 17 weeks in total in the season.

Traditionally, the NFL is made up of two conferences: the American Conference (AFC) and the National Conference (NFC). Each conference has four divisions (North, South, East and West), with four teams each, for a total of 16 teams per conference. And 32 teams in total in the league.

The winners of each division (four per conference) qualify for the playoffs, totaling eight teams. The top three from each conference, apart from the division champions, complete the 14 ranked teams. They compete in a kill-kill tournament, the playoffs, and the AFC champion faces the NFC champion in Super Bowl LVII.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots haven't had a good start to the 2022 season so far. The team comes with a win and three losses and is in the last position of the AFC East division. Thus, the team needs a positive result to not get too complicated in the fight to try to reach the playoffs.

The team started the season losing to the Miami Dolphins 20-7, but then recovered in Week 2 by beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-14. Both games were away. Then, in week 3, they lost at home to the Baltimore Ravens by 37-26. And finally, in week 4, the Foxborough team was defeated away from home by the Green Bay Packers by 27-24.

This week, the Pats will have a question regarding the quarterback position and it should only be resolved on the eve of the game. The starter Mac Jones continues to recover from an ankle injury and is doubtful. Substitute Brian Hoyer, who went out early in the game against the Packers with a concussion, also has uncertain status. And if neither is available, rookie Bailey Zappe, selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, is expected to lead the offense again.

In the duel against the Packers, shirt 4 did a good job, even playing in the 'fire', and hit 10 passes from 15 for 99 yards and a touchdown. He also had a missed fumble, but did not compromise overall and maintained a competitive attack.

But with their air play somewhat limited, the Patriots had to bet on land play. And they produced 167 yards running with the ball. The best was running back Damien Harris, with 18 carries for 86 total yards and a touchdown. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson also delivered good numbers, with 14 carries for 66 yards.

However, the problem against the Packers was the defense against the inland game, which conceded 199 yards to the rival from Green Bay. And at the same time, the defensive unit as a whole was opportunistic, intercepting Aaron Rodgers once and returning for a TD, and also recovering a fumble, both takeaways led by rookie cornerback Jack Jones.

So far, the Pats' defense, always one of the strengths of the team led by Bill Belichick, has been an Achilles heel. The team has been giving up 24.5 points and 346.8 yards per match.

Detroit Lions

The one-win-three-loss campaign so far is not surprising, but the Detroit Lions have been one of the biggest surprises of the season so far. And the main reason is that the team has been competitive even in losses.

In Week 1, the Philadelphia Eagles lost 38-35. In Week 2, Detroit rehabilitated and defeated the Washington Commanders 36-27. And then, in Weeks 3 and 4, losses to rival Minnesota Vikings ( 28-24) and for the Seattle Seahawks (48-45).

In fact, the team's offensive performance is the best in the NFL so far, averaging 436.8 yards and 35 points per match, the highest marks across the league after four weeks. On the other hand, defensive performance is the worst in the entire National Football League, with averages of 444.8 yards conceded and 35.3 points conceded per match.

However, it is undeniable that head coach Dan Campbell, who is in his second year as head coach of the Michigan franchise, is giving his face to the team. The problem is that the team has been that “play and let play”. And that can be a problem with better quality teams or with coaches who know how to exploit the opponent's weaknesses. Bill Belichick fits well in the latter case.

So the Lions urgently need to improve defensively if they really want to fight for something this season.

In the match against the Seahawks last week, the Lions conceded an absurd 555 total yards to the Seattle rival, being 320 passing and 235 rushing. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith hit 23 passes for 30 for 320 yards and two touchdowns, still rushing for 49 yards and a touchdown, and running back Rashaad Penny had 151 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Numbers that show how weak the Lions are defensively.

On the offensive side, quarterback Jared Goff was accurate on 26 of 39 passes for 378 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. And running back Jamaal Williams rushed for 108 yards and two TDs on 19 carries.

In aerial play, Goff's main target was tight end T.J. Hockenson, who had eight receptions for 179 yards and two touchdowns. And wide receiver Josh Reynolds also did well, with seven receptions for 81 yards and a TD.

Against the Patriots, the first goal the Lions will have to meet if they want to win is to contain more of New England's land game. Only then, depending on who the opposing QB is, will Detroit have any chance of winning.
